The Republic of Turkey Crisis Committee Perkiomen School Stephanie Black and Tae Hyun Kim Turkey is a large country located in the Middle East. The neighbors surrounding it are Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. The bodies of water around it are the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, and the Black Sea. It is governed by a parliamentary representative government, the capital being Ankara. Turkey is a member of NATO, elected non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Council of Europe, OECD, WEOG, OSCE and the G-20 major economies. Turkey has begun full membership negotiations with the European Union as of 2005. Much of Turkey’s economy is based on trade through importing and exporting goods. Turkey holds control of the Bosporus Strait, an important trading route connecting the black sea with the Sea of Marmara. Turkey has expressed concerns over the safety and reliability of this passageway. It also controls the Dardanelles strait. The economy stands on a mix of modern industry and commerce. A third of the exports are in the textile industry. 30% of employment, however, is dedicated to agriculture. There is a rising importance on automotive and electronic industries. There is a growing deficit in Turkey, but the economy is recovering after a small fall within the past three years. Turkey supports discussions about economic policies and matters concerning trade. As an alternate route, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline exists running through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey. Also, on matters of water, Turkey has the Euphrates River, Tigris River, Aras River, and also includes Lake Van. Turkey has been in close contact with the war in Afghanistan and the United States. The Obama administration is asking Turkey to get involved with the Uranium enrichment that is going on in Iran. The USA wants Turkey to be a neutral medium for this substance. Also, the Obama administration would like Turkey to send more troops to Afghanistan, though the country has already declared it has supported the war militarily every way that it can. Turkey did not support the reprimand that the UN decided on when Iran failed to declare a secret nuclear enrichment facility. Rukey is one of the five NATO members which are part of the nuclear sharing policy of the alliance. Turkey began modernizing military programs in 1998. Attachments:
